The campaign achieved full funding within the first 25 hours.

The game offers a distinct take on both folk horror and fantasy RPGs, focusing on the lives of ordinary medieval villagers rather than traditional adventurers or heroes. Players take on roles such as blacksmiths, shepherds, and midwives, striving to protect their community from an unnatural terror born of war. The narrative balances the quiet, everyday moments of village life with the looming threat of a monstrous presence, creating a blend of survival, resilience, and difficult choices.

Originally created as a one-page RPG for Itch.io’s 2024 One-Page RPG Jam, Pitchfork Extended has been expanded into a 16-page A5 zine for ZineQuest. This new edition refines the game’s OGREISH framework, a D6 dice pool system designed for intuitive, conversation-driven gameplay. The mechanics are easy to learn but robust enough to support immersive, long-lasting stories.

The gameplay revolves around a three-phase cycle: narration, challenge, and outcome. Players describe their actions, face challenges influenced by environmental and situational elements called “facets,” and resolve outcomes based on dice rolls. These outcomes range from triumphant successes to catastrophic failures, each shaping the ongoing narrative. Facets, such as weather, terrain, and relationships, add depth to the gameplay, ensuring that every decision carries weight.

Set in the war-torn Lower Princedoms, Pitchfork Extended explores themes of survival, community, and defiance in the face of overwhelming odds. The game draws inspiration from works like The Witcher, Bloodborne, and Midsommar, but it distinguishes itself by focusing on the quiet heroism of ordinary people. Players must uncover signs of the monster’s presence—tracks in the fields, missing livestock, unnatural growls—while grappling with the weight of their choices and the fragility of their community.

The zine includes expanded lore, core rules, village creation tools, monster design guidelines, and villager playbooks. Backers will also receive downloadable resources such as village sheets, monster sheets, and facet sheets to streamline gameplay. Stretch goals will expand the zine to 20 or 24 pages, adding more illustrations and content, with higher funding tiers potentially including a bonus monster-hunt playset titled Shadow of Salt.

With 27 days left in the campaign, there is still time to support this unique RPG and be part of its journey.

Dyskami Publishing Company Partners with Skybound Entertainment to Develop Heart Attack Role-Playing Game https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/dyskami-publishing-company-partners-with-skybound-entertainment-to-develop-heart-attack-role-playing-game/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dyskami-publishing-company-partners-with-skybound-entertainment-to-develop-heart-attack-role-playing-game Wed, 26 Feb 2025 22:02:35 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21567 Dyskami Publishing Company has announced a licensing agreement with Skybound Entertainment to create and distribute a tabletop role-playing game (RPG) based on the comic book series Heart Attack. The series, created by writer Shawn Kittelsen and artist Eric Zawadzki, is set in a near-future, post-pandemic world where gene therapy has eliminated disease but led to the emergence of “Variants”—individuals with unique abilities who face government oppression and the denial of their human rights.

The Heart Attack RPG will allow players to step into the roles of Variants, navigating a dystopian society while using their powers to challenge an authoritarian regime. The game aims to incorporate the action, drama, and moral complexity of the original comic series into its gameplay.

Mark MacKinnon, President of Dyskami Publishing Company said the following about the project:

“The themes and topics explored in the Heart Attack comic makes for a powerful and poignant RPG game setting. Variants take a stance against an oppressive authoritarian regime – fighting the power with powers. I am thrilled that we have an opportunity to add Heart Attack and its perfect blend of action, drama, and unexpected consequences to our game offerings.”

The game will feature a dual-stat system, combining Dyskami’s Tri-Stat System, known for its adaptability in handling superpowered characters, with the narrative-driven Powered by the Apocalypse framework. This approach is designed to offer players flexibility in how they engage with the game’s mechanics and storytelling.

A Kickstarter campaign for the Heart Attack RPG is scheduled to launch in April 2025. Backers will have early access to a core rulebook, a game screen, and other accessories before the game’s official release in late 2025.

The partnership coincides with the continued expansion of the Heart Attack franchise. Skybound Entertainment, which published the original graphic novel, is collaborating with Fuji TV to produce an eight-episode Japanese-language live-action drama series based on the comic. The series is set to premiere in March 2025 on Fuji TV on Demand (FOD) in Japan, with international distribution managed by Cineflix.

World’s Largest Dungeon Returns: 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition for 5E Launches Crowdfunding Campaign in 2025 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/worlds-largest-dungeon-returns-20th-anniversary-platinum-edition-for-5e-launches-crowdfunding-campaign-in-2025/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=worlds-largest-dungeon-returns-20th-anniversary-platinum-edition-for-5e-launches-crowdfunding-campaign-in-2025 Tue, 25 Feb 2025 22:50:43 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21540 Tabletop RPG enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to revisit one of the most ambitious adventures in RPG history. World’s Largest RPGs has announced the release of the World’s Largest Dungeon: 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition, a fully updated version of the legendary mega-dungeon campaign for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (5E). The crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on May 13, via BackerKit.

Originally published in 2004 by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), The World’s Largest Dungeon earned a Guinness World Record for its unprecedented size and scope. The campaign, designed to take players from level 1 to 20, features every monster from the System Reference Document (SRD) and offers an interconnected, inescapable dungeon experience. It quickly became a hallmark of tabletop RPGs, known for its sprawling labyrinth of traps, factions, and secrets.

Now, World’s Largest RPGs is bringing this iconic dungeon back to life with a Platinum Edition that builds on the original while introducing new content and enhancements. The updated edition will include 16 new boss miniatures, curated miniature sets from Reaper Miniatures, and 16 poster-sized maps alongside new detail maps. Over 1,600 original encounters have been fine-tuned for modern gameplay, and the edition will feature exclusive Fanroll dice, an audiobook by AudioRPG, and new stretch goal content.

One of the standout features of the Platinum Edition is the inclusion of Secret Door Encounters, self-contained dungeon expansions crafted by a variety of talented RPG authors. These adventures introduce unexpected twists, hidden threats, and entirely new ways to experience the dungeon. Industry veterans such as Robert J. Schwalb (Shadow of the Demon Lord), Timothy Brown (Dragon Kings), and Leamon Crafton (Torg Eternity) have contributed to this new content.

The Platinum Edition also introduces a Secret Door Adventures Contest, hosted in partnership with Portals to Adventure. Aspiring RPG designers can submit their own dungeon encounters, with fan-voted winners earning a spot in the Secret Doors book alongside contributions from established creators. Timothy Brown, CEO of Portals to Adventure, described the contest as a first in the industry, offering new writers a chance to showcase their work, earn prize money, and be published as part of the World’s Largest Dungeon Platinum Edition.

Original lead designer Jim Pinto has returned to the project, redesigning the infamous first level and crafting a new adventure to introduce players to the dungeon. The Platinum Edition will be released as a four-book set, updated for modern play while preserving the original’s depth and challenge. Each book features unique fantasy artwork, immersive page layouts, and rich world-building details, making it easier than ever for game masters to navigate the dungeon’s encounters and secrets.

The crowdfunding campaign for the World’s Largest Dungeon: 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition begins on May 13

Phase Shift Games Announces “Widget’s Workshop,” a New Drop-Style Tabletop Game https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/phase-shift-games-announces-widgets-workshop-a-new-drop-style-tabletop-game/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=phase-shift-games-announces-widgets-workshop-a-new-drop-style-tabletop-game Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:11:03 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21431 Phase Shift Games has unveiled Widget’s Workshop, the latest entry in its “drop-style” game series. The game is scheduled to launch on BackerKit’s crowdfunding platform on March 13, 2025, as part of the Pocketopia program, which emphasizes compact and portable board and card games.

Widget’s Workshop blends card crafting and spatial set collection into a tabletop experience. The game begins with players dropping 80 custom-shaped, semi-transparent part cards onto the table, creating a randomized pile of components. Players take turns using one finger to extract parts from the pile, aiming to collect matching pieces to build robots and golems. The pile’s unpredictable nature—with parts often hidden, partially obscured, or flipped—introduces an element of strategy and chance to the gameplay.

Once players gather the required parts, including left and right arms, left and right legs, and a head or torso, they can assemble unique constructs. The game offers over 1 million possible combinations, each with its own illustration and name. Scoring is based on how well the attributes of the parts align, encouraging players to optimize their builds for higher points.

The game builds on Phase Shift Games’ signature “drop-style” mechanics, seen in previous titles like Dungeon Drop and Drop Drive. This approach randomizes setup and incorporates physical interaction into the core gameplay. Players must carefully extract parts from the central pile, navigating its shifting structure to find the pieces they need. The card crafting aspect allows players to combine collected parts into unique constructs, with scoring determined by matching attributes.

As part of BackerKit’s Pocketopia program, Widget’s Workshop is designed to be compact and portable, making it suitable for a variety of play environments. The small-box format aligns with the program’s focus on accessible and travel-friendly tabletop experiences.

Kobold Press to Launch Whimsical New Tabletop RPG, RiverBank, in 2025 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/kobold-press-to-launch-whimsical-new-tabletop-rpg-riverbank-in-2025/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kobold-press-to-launch-whimsical-new-tabletop-rpg-riverbank-in-2025 Wed, 19 Feb 2025 20:02:57 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21374 Kobold Press has announced its latest project, RiverBank RPG, set to launch on BackerKit in April 2025. The game, designed by acclaimed author Kij Johnson, promises a unique blend of charm, whimsy, and narrative-driven gameplay, offering a fresh departure from the company’s previous works.

RiverBank RPG transports players to a world of anthropomorphic animals navigating a society filled with tea parties, garden strolls, grand balls, and village fairs. Players take on the roles of elegant Animals, balancing their characters’ Animality and Poetry as they embark on curious quests. The game emphasizes storytelling and character interaction, with decisions influencing the unfolding narrative.

Unlike Kobold Press’s previous d20-based systems, RiverBank RPG introduces a new game system optimized for 3 to 5 players. It uses standard dice (d4, d6, d12) to resolve actions, focusing on narrative mechanics rather than combat-heavy gameplay.

Kij Johnson, the game’s designer, and a Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “I am so excited to see RiverBank RPG happening,” Johnson said. “I have loved every minute of designing the game, and I feel so lucky that Kobold Press is doing it. I can’t wait for players to join us on the River Bank.”

The setting, which debuted in 2018, has grown to include over 1,000 pages of content across several books. These latest additions aim to expand the Svilland universe with new regions, adventures, and gameplay options.

The first book, Svilland: Lost Lands of Orfhal, introduces a new region called Orfhal, described as a harsh and dangerous landscape. Players will explore a desolate area abandoned by the gods, where the Hersir of War, Sevvi, seeks to unite the tribes of Orfhal while facing the return of their former leader, Odd. The book will provide details on Orfhal’s locations, inhabitants, and history, along with over 50 new monsters inspired by Norse mythology. It will also include two new D&D 5E classes—the primal warrior Hamramr and the mystical guide Herald—as well as new archetypes and heritages for character customization.

The second book, Svilland: At the Heart of Frost, is an adventure book designed for characters ranging from level 3 to level 12. The story revolves around two rival warbands—one from Svilland and one from Orfhal—engaged in a series of conflicts. Players will experience the narrative from two distinct perspectives, allowing for multiple playthroughs before the storylines converge in a climactic finale. This structure aims to offer varied gameplay experiences for different groups.

DRS Publishing’s announcement follows their recent ENNIE Award nomination for Corpus Malicious, a supplement in their Corpus series for D&D 5E. The company is also collaborating with Hero Concept on a Svilland video game, further expanding the setting’s reach.

To support the release of Lost Lands of Orfhal and At the Heart of Frost, DRS Publishing will launch a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign on March 18th. Backers will have the opportunity to purchase the new books, as well as existing titles in the Svilland series. Those interested can sign up now for updates on the campaign.

Something Rotten: A New TTRPG Adventure Zine Seeks Funding on Kickstarter https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/something-rotten-a-new-ttrpg-adventure-zine-seeks-funding-on-kickstarter/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=something-rotten-a-new-ttrpg-adventure-zine-seeks-funding-on-kickstarter Wed, 19 Feb 2025 19:42:38 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21356 Leeds-based creative duo Troll in the Well has announced the launch of their debut tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) adventure, Something Rotten, now available for funding on Kickstarter. Designed for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (5E) and other TTRPG systems, the project is described as a goblin-themed adventure zine that combines humor, creativity, and classic fantasy elements.

The adventure is set in the Inn of Ill Omen, a struggling establishment facing an unusual crisis: a mysterious and overwhelming stench that is driving away customers. Players take on the role of an adventuring party tasked with uncovering the source of the odor. Their investigation leads them through dark forests, deep caves, and into the midst of a goblin cult that worships a dismembered but still-living troll.

The adventure offers multiple paths for players to resolve the situation. They may choose to confront the troll’s semi-sentient limbs, negotiate with the goblin cult, or even reassemble the troll and form an alliance. The outcome depends on the choices made by the players and the creativity of the game master.

Something Rotten is a 48-page, full-color A5 zine that includes tools and resources for both players and game masters. It features creature profiles, mechanics for handling the troll’s limbs, and tables for generating unique goblin cults. The zine also contains side quests, hidden secrets, magic items, and additional content to extend the adventure beyond the main storyline. The adventure is designed to last between two to five sessions, depending on the level of exploration and interaction pursued by the players.

The project is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter until March 5th. Backers can choose between a digital PDF version or a physical zine, with all physical copies including a free digital download. The creators have indicated that the writing and most of the illustrations are complete, with a planned release in summer 2025 if funding goals are met.

Troll in the Well, the team behind Something Rotten, is a writer-illustrator duo based in Leeds, UK. Their shared interest in quirky fantasy and TTRPGs has led to the development of this debut project, which they hope will appeal to both new and experienced players.
