Written by Alyssa Faden and Gary Con founder Luke Gygax, the 72-page softcover book will be available for the first time at Gary Con XVII, taking place at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, from March 20-23.

Set in 1891 on the shores of Lake Geneva, the adventure explores a narrative that blends Chaosium’s Lovecraftian storytelling with the roleplaying legacy of Lake Geneva, the birthplace of Dungeons & Dragons. The project is part of Chaosium’s 50th Anniversary celebrations and highlights the shared history of the two companies in the tabletop roleplaying game (RPG) industry.

Luke Gygax, founder of Gary Con and son of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, commented on the collaboration:

Gary Con is a memorial convention that celebrates my father’s legacy and the enduring passion of the gaming community he helped create through Dungeons & Dragons. This year’s partnership with Chaosium as the Premier Sponsor of Gary Con feels like a convergence of history and creativity, bringing together two pillars of the RPG world to honor their shared dedication to immersive storytelling and imagination.

Call of Cthulhu Inducted into the ENNIE Awards Hall of Fame https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/call-of-cthulhu-inducted-into-the-ennie-awards-hall-of-fame/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=call-of-cthulhu-inducted-into-the-ennie-awards-hall-of-fame Mon, 28 Oct 2024 19:24:09 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=20666 The Call of Cthulhu role-playing game has been officially inducted into the ENNIE Awards Hall of Fame, recognizing its lasting impact on tabletop gaming and horror storytelling. This announcement, made on October 26, marks the second entry in the Hall of Fame as part of the ENNIE Awards’ 25th anniversary celebration, with one game honored each month leading up to the 25th awards ceremony in August 2025.

The ENNIE Awards shared, “It is with great pride that the ENNIE Awards inducts Call of Cthulhu into the Hall of Fame. Its influence has spread far beyond the tabletop, leaving an indelible mark on role-playing games, popular culture, and the way we tell stories of fear and madness.”

Originally released in 1981 by Chaosium Inc. and created by Sandy Petersen, Call of Cthulhu was among the first role-playing games to shift from traditional fantasy themes to horror. The game, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories, uses Chaosium’s Basic Role-Playing system to focus on character vulnerability and psychological tension, rather than combat. This distinctive approach introduced a new genre of storytelling and mechanics, which has inspired many other games in the years since.

Call of Cthulhu has gone on to achieve global recognition, translated into over 15 languages, and has won more than 100 industry awards, including 44 ENNIEs. The game has influenced a range of other titles, from Trail of Cthulhu to Delta Green, and has inspired numerous Lovecraft-themed video games.

The ENNIE Awards ceremony will continue to add to its Hall of Fame inductees monthly until the August 2025 event. For more on the Hall of Fame announcement, visit the ENNIE Awards website.

Chaosium Releases No Time to Scream for Call of Cthulhu https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/chaosium-releases-no-time-to-scream-for-call-of-cthulhu/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chaosium-releases-no-time-to-scream-for-call-of-cthulhu Thu, 24 Oct 2024 23:59:34 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=20592 Chaosium has launched No Time to Scream, a new release for Call of Cthulhu that offers three short-play scenarios designed for quick yet intense sessions. Each scenario is crafted to be played in around two hours, making it ideal for single evening adventures. The supplement comes with pre-generated investigators, full-color maps, and handouts to assist both players and Keepers.

The scenarios are unified by a common theme of time pressure, with the investigators facing a race against the clock. Guidance is provided for Keepers to maintain the pace and emphasize the indifferent nature of the Mythos. The supplement also offers suggestions for adjusting the scenarios to accommodate larger groups of players.

The adventures take investigators through a range of perilous situations, including a mysterious woodland cabin, a morgue with a missing corpse, and a remote distillery in the Alaskan wilderness. Each scenario presents a unique horror to confront, with the constant reminder that time is running out.

No Time to Scream is available now in a full-color hardcover edition priced at $29.99, which includes a PDF, or as a standalone PDF for $14.99.

Chaosium Releases “Alone Against the Static” in Hardcover: A Solo Call of Cthulhu Adventure https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/chaosium-releases-alone-against-the-static-in-hardcover-a-solo-call-of-cthulhu-adventure/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chaosium-releases-alone-against-the-static-in-hardcover-a-solo-call-of-cthulhu-adventure https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/chaosium-releases-alone-against-the-static-in-hardcover-a-solo-call-of-cthulhu-adventure/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2023 20:15:48 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=14298 Chaosium has announced the release of “Alone Against the Static” in hardcover, an engaging solo adventure set in the unnerving universe of Call of Cthulhu. This modern-era scenario, initially set in the early 1990s, promises a unique solo gaming experience that delves deep into the heart of the Cthulhu Mythos.

A Troubled Getaway Turns into a Fight for Survival

The story follows Alex and Charlie, a couple seeking to rekindle their marriage with a secluded weekend in the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, their retreat quickly spirals into a chilling encounter with ancient, dark forces. Players will face the question: Will they survive, alone against the static?

Innovative Solo Mechanics and Replayability

“Alone Against the Static” is designed uniquely for single-player enjoyment, requiring no game Keeper. Players can choose to play as either Alex or Charlie, each character offering different strengths, weaknesses, and choices. This design ensures that no two playthroughs are alike, providing a richly replayable experience.

The Log Sheet: A New Way to Track Your Journey

A notable feature is the introduction of The Log Sheet, a new mechanic in the world of solo Call of Cthulhu play. This tool allows players to track their choices, discoveries, and the items they encounter, all while avoiding spoilers. The Log Sheet doubles as a list of achievements, challenging players to uncover all the secrets the game has to offer.

Expand Your Mythos with a New Entity

In addition to the solo adventure, “Alone Against the Static” includes a new Mythos entity, complete with details for integration into other Call of Cthulhu scenarios. This addition offers players the opportunity to extend their experience beyond solo play and into group adventures, potentially using this solo adventure as a prelude.

Availability and Pricing

“Alone Against the Static” is available for purchase on Chaosium.com. The full-color hardcover edition, which includes a PDF copy, is priced at $29.99. Alternatively, the standalone PDF is available for $14.99, also purchasable at DriveThruRPG.
