Inside Dungeons Reforged: A Conversation with Dwarven Forge on Their Latest Modular Terrain https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/inside-dungeons-reforged-a-conversation-with-dwarven-forge-on-their-latest-modular-terrain/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=inside-dungeons-reforged-a-conversation-with-dwarven-forge-on-their-latest-modular-terrain Mon, 14 Oct 2024 22:05:04 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=20068 Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 16th, at Noon Eastern Time, Dwarven Forge will be launching its latest Gamefound campaign, Dungeons Reforged. This campaign marks a major reimagining of their dungeon terrain line, bringing updated pieces, new additions, and a new paint scheme to the table. We recently asked Chris London, Head of Marketing at Dwarven Forge, a few questions about the project and what fans of their terrain can expect.

Chris shared that Dungeons Reforged is designed to address some key challenges that the company has faced in recent years. “For years, we were running off of a Kickstarter-based model where we were just focused on getting from campaign to campaign,” he explained. “The way the sets were laid out was optimized around the Kickstarter pledge structure, which meant that at the end of the day we had a lot of sets and pieces that were difficult to restock, or didn’t make a ton of sense to new customers trying to get started on our webstore.”

With Dungeons Reforged, Dwarven Forge has reorganized their offerings to make it easier for new collectors to dive into the hobby while also appealing to long-time fans. “We’ve made new ‘core sets’ that let new customers get a ton of table coverage affordably,” Chris noted. There are also new dressing packs and some long-awaited pieces that have been out of stock for years, like the Bladed Ziggurat and Acid Furnace.

One of the standout features of the campaign is the introduction of the “Sinister” paint scheme. This darker, more eerie color palette brings a completely different atmosphere to Dwarven Forge’s dungeon terrain, perfect for constructing necrotic or corrupted environments. “The Sinister paint scheme is also jaw-dropping on the table and gives a Shadowfell Keep or Necromancer’s lair feel.” Chris added.

For existing Dwarven Forge fans, Dungeons Reforged offers a chance to fill in some gaps in their collections, with new pieces like the trapdoor insert or corner pillar. These additions enhance the functionality of the sets, allowing for more dynamic and varied dungeon builds. The campaign also offers the opportunity for backers to provide feedback and influence the final product before orders are placed.

When asked about the inspiration behind the reworked dungeon terrain, Chris pointed to the timeless appeal of classic dungeon crawls. “The dungeon is the classic fantasy adventure setting,” he said. “We were heavily focused on making modular, interactive pieces that would bring all of the classic dungeon-crawling tropes to life. Now that we’ve played with these pieces for over half a decade, we’ve had ideas on how to execute on the classic dungeon trappings even better.”

Looking ahead, Dwarven Forge has plenty more in store for fans. With their Lowtown city-building Kickstarter nearing fulfillment and the Starforged Sci-Fi campaign on the horizon, the company is gearing up for an exciting few years. “We’re planning to share details on our next campaigns before the end of the year, after Dungeons Reforged launches,” Chris hinted.

Be sure to check out the campaign tomorrow at Noon Eastern on Gamefound to see it all in action.

This campaign offers an updated and expanded version of the 28mm scale dungeon tiles created by Ilya, a designer from Vilnius, Lithuania. The set includes over 80 pieces, offering a wide variety of tiles, doors, columns, traps, and special tiles, allowing players to create customizable dungeons.

Backers can select between two color schemes—Cold Gray and Desert Tomb—and can also download a free print-and-play version of the set in different colors. The design is focused on portability and flexibility, allowing game masters to quickly set up and build dungeons of varying sizes and layouts. The set has been praised by previous backers for its quality and ease of use in tabletop RPG sessions.

This is Ilya’s fourth crowdfunding campaign and the first to be hosted on Gamefound after a successful Kickstarter last year.

The Mad Wizard’s Hall campaign reached its goal in just 4 hours and 57 minutes, surpassing its target of $1,338. It has raised $3,188 from 17 backers, with 17 days remaining. Only 70 sets are available in this limited-run campaign, so those interested are encouraged to pledge before it closes. More details are available on the Gamefound page.

This follows a successful initial run in March, where the campaign raised nearly $2.2 million through the support of over 6,100 backers. The Pledge Manager phase offers both previous backers and new supporters another chance to participate.

The campaign, known for introducing PrismaCast technology, delivers pre-painted RPG terrains and miniatures that promise high-quality, durable finishes. This new technology aims to replicate the detail and artistry of expert painting at a more accessible price point and reduces the time gamers spend preparing game pieces.

Available options within the campaign include three main themes: Rocky Caves, Demonic Caves, and Belly of the Beast, each providing a unique setting for gameplay.

Those interested in contributing to or revisiting the campaign can do so by visiting the Archon Studio’s Gamefound Project. The Pledge Manager will remain open until December 13, allowing a limited period for engagement.

These developments come as part of GF9’s partnerships with War Scenery, based in Germany, and Thunderhead Studios.

The collaboration with War Scenery will see the latter’s digital designs transformed into fully painted terrain pieces for the Battlefield in a Box brand. “The collaboration with War Scenery allows us to introduce their designs to a wider audience, starting with the models showcased at AdeptiCon. We plan to release the first wave of products at the beginning of the third quarter,” said John-Paul Brisigotti, CEO of GF9.

Moreover, GF9 unveiled Mundus Imperialis, a new range of 6mm terrain developed in partnership with Thunderhead Studios, aimed at smaller scale wargames. This range will feature various pre-painted buildings, including the Municipal Depot and Castelan Base, offering players new settings for their battles. Brisigotti added, “Mundus Imperialis is designed to offer a new scale of war. The range, along with the Battlefield in a Box series and the new War Scenery sets, is part of our effort to provide gamers with high-quality terrain right out of the box.”

The Mundus Imperialis range, together with the “Chapter” and “United Frontier” sets, is expected to be available for pre-order soon, with a release date in the third quarter.

This innovative campaign, set to debut on Gamefound on March 5th, promises to transform the RPG terrain landscape with its cutting-edge PrismaCast technology.

Dungeons & Lasers VI: Caves introduces three distinct main themes for backers to choose from, ensuring a versatile and immersive experience for a variety of settings:

  • Rocky Caves: These universal cavern pieces are designed to fit seamlessly into any game setting, providing a generic yet versatile backdrop for adventures.
  • Demonic Caves: Tailored for narratives involving cultists or demonic entities, these caves feature sinister designs on their walls and floors, perfect for underground lairs.
  • Belly of the Beast: This theme offers a unique setting with fleshy walls and meat bridges, ideal for parties finding themselves inside a colossal creature such as a Tarrasque.

The standout feature of this campaign is the introduction of PrismaCast, Archon Studio’s new pre-painted technology. PrismaCast aims to elevate the quality of painted terrain with a durability and affordability not seen before in the market. This technology promises a finish comparable to that of skilled painters, resistant to scraping and wear. Moreover, Archon plans to apply PrismaCast to previous terrain sets, expanding its reach beyond the new campaign offerings.

In addition to the innovative terrain, the Dungeons & Lasers VI: Caves campaign will continue Archon Studio’s tradition of offering enticing freebies. Backers can expect a range of stretch goals featuring subthemes and optional parts, along with exclusive miniatures: a Minotaur for returning backers and a Gelatinous Cube for those who follow the campaign pre-launch.

Mark your calendars for March 5th to join this groundbreaking adventure and bring unparalleled depth and realism to your RPG sessions with Dungeons & Lasers VI: Caves. Discover more about PrismaCast and the campaign on Archon Studio’s Gamefound page and their official blog.
