QuestWorlds Roleplaying System Launches Worldwide https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/questworlds-roleplaying-system-launches-worldwide/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=questworlds-roleplaying-system-launches-worldwide Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:18:10 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21437 Chaosium has released QuestWorlds, a new self-contained roleplaying system designed for cinematic and larger-than-life gameplay. Inspired by classic pulps, comic books, and weird fiction, QuestWorlds aims to provide a versatile and accessible experience for players of all levels.

QuestWorlds is a complete roleplaying system that does not require additional books to play. Its rules-light framework focuses on resolving in-game conflicts quickly and efficiently, with a simple core mechanic and optional rules that allow for customization to fit various settings and genres. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of storytelling styles, from action-packed adventures to mysterious explorations.

The system includes streamlined character creation rules, enabling players to design unique characters in a short amount of time. Players can create characters ranging from ordinary individuals to extraordinary heroes, with no limits on creativity.

In addition to character creation, QuestWorlds provides tools for designing custom settings. Players can build their own worlds, whether inspired by classic genres or entirely original concepts, offering a high degree of personalization for their games.

QuestWorlds is currently available in PDF format for $19.99 through Chaosium’s website and DriveThruRPG.

The game reflects the philosophy of Chaosium founder Greg Stafford, who emphasized the cooperative nature of storytelling games. Stafford described such games as a shared experience where players contribute to an ongoing narrative through verbal interaction and imagination.

“In a storytelling game, the object is to participate verbally in the cooperative experience of a story. Everyone talks in order to contribute to the ongoing story. Inevitably, some people will talk a lot, some will talk only a little. Hopefully, everyone will talk a lot when their turn comes around and only a little at other times.

“Play is verbal and imaginative. The action takes place in the minds of the players. This is a social game in the most positive sense of the word. Aggressive competition or legalistic arguments over rules are alien to the spirit of a storytelling game.”

RuneQuest Classic: 1992’s Sun County Returns with New Edition https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/runequest-classic-1992s-sun-county-returns-with-new-edition/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=runequest-classic-1992s-sun-county-returns-with-new-edition Wed, 04 Dec 2024 23:23:22 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=21177 Chaosium has released a remastered edition of Sun County, a beloved campaign supplement originally published in 1992 for the third edition of RuneQuest. This new version, part of the RuneQuest Classic series, is now available on DriveThruRPG in digital and print formats.

Sun County is set in the Gloranthan region of Prax, where a fiercely independent community of farmers has withstood generations of challenges, including hostile nomads and environmental hardships. Known as the Land of the Sun, the area is both forbidding and intriguing, attracting adventurers with the promise of wealth, fame, and discovery.

The remastered edition includes enhanced artwork, restored by Chaosium’s Rick Meints and Nick Brooke, and features a new foreword by RPG historian Shannon Appelcline. In his foreword, Appelcline reflects on the original release of Sun County as a landmark moment for RuneQuest, ushering in a brief but impactful creative period often referred to as the RuneQuest Renaissance. He highlights how the themes and innovations introduced during this era continue to influence Gloranthan creators and the broader RuneQuest community.

The new edition has been carefully crafted to maintain the integrity of the original while incorporating modern touches. Enhanced with color interiors in its hardcover version, it serves both as a nostalgic piece for long-time fans and an accessible entry point for new players. This edition includes scenarios, detailed cultural and historical notes, and contributions from a talented team of creators, including Michael O’Brien, Ken Rolston, and Greg Stafford, among others.

Chaosium’s remastered Sun County is now available for purchase in digital and print formats on DriveThruRPG, inviting players to once again explore the mysteries and adventures of the Sun Dome lands.

ElfQuest Kickstarter Reaches Funding in 10 Minutes https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/elfquest-kickstarter-reaches-funding-in-10-minutes/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=elfquest-kickstarter-reaches-funding-in-10-minutes Wed, 30 Oct 2024 19:49:12 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=20758 The ElfQuest RPG Kickstarter campaign achieved its funding target in under 10 minutes and reached $100,000 within half a day. This support for the deluxe remaster of the 1984 ElfQuest RPG, based on Wendy and Richard Pini’s graphic series, brings new stretch goals into focus, beginning with a Gamemaster screen at $125,000.

In its original release, Chaosium’s ElfQuest RPG, developed in collaboration with WaRP Graphics, did not feature a GM screen. The current campaign introduces a new 3-panel screen with artwork on one side and reference material on the other. This item will be added to the boxed set for backers who choose physical rewards, and it will also be available in digital format for PDF backers once the stretch goal is met.

Celebrating the game’s 40th anniversary, this edition expands beyond the original 1-inch box to a 2-inch design, featuring an array of items, including the Elfbook, Worldbook, character sheets, a map of the World of Two Moons, and reference sheets to assist gameplay. Further stretch goals include a world map, a custom dice set, and new creature standees, contingent on the campaign’s success.

First released in 1984, the ElfQuest RPG saw multiple reprints, and a second edition in 1986 combined materials from the initial set into a single volume. The remastered edition revisits the multi-book layout of the first edition, updated to incorporate errata and additional content.

The campaign aims to reintroduce players to the World of Two Moons, inviting them to explore the classic world and characters of ElfQuest. With stretch goals in place, the campaign promises to bring new elements to this established RPG as it approaches additional milestones.

Chaosium Announces Winners of 2024 Greg Stafford Memorial Award for Gloranthan Fandom https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/chaosium-announces-winners-of-2024-greg-stafford-memorial-award-for-gloranthan-fandom/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chaosium-announces-winners-of-2024-greg-stafford-memorial-award-for-gloranthan-fandom Sun, 13 Oct 2024 19:57:25 +0000 https://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/?p=19948 Chaosium has announced the winners of the 2024 Greg Stafford Memorial Award for Gloranthan Fandom, recognizing significant contributions to Gloranthan fan culture. This year’s award is presented to David Hall, Kevin Jacklin, Dan Barker, and David Cheng for their work in running the freeform game “Home of the Bold” at Chaosium Con in Ann Arbor last April.

“Home of the Bold” is an epic Gloranthan live-action roleplaying game that last ran over two decades ago. Its return at Chaosium Con marked the first time in 24 years that the game—which involves over 50 players over eight hours—was staged, introducing it to a new generation of fans. The event was also held at Continuum in Bedford, UK, in July.

Chaosium Vice President Michael O’Brien commended the winners for their longstanding contributions to Glorantha fandom. He noted that each of the winners had played important roles in supporting and expanding the Glorantha universe over the years, whether through artwork, conventions, writing, or community efforts. He emphasized that while this award specifically recognizes their efforts in 2024, each recipient has made numerous important contributions to the community over the years.

“Home of the Bold” originally debuted in 1992 at Convulsion in Leicester, UK, and went on to be played at notable conventions worldwide. The revival in 2024 was accompanied by a special new edition of “A Rough Guide to Boldhome,” which serves as the official sourcebook for the game and is available in digital formats.

The Greg Stafford Memorial Award for Gloranthan Fandom was established in 2018 in memory of Chaosium’s founder, Greg Stafford, to honor outstanding contributions to the Glorantha community. This year marks the sixth anniversary of Stafford’s passing, and the award continues to celebrate the creativity and dedication of Glorantha’s fans.
